Silk Road Certification is the certification body for the RecyClass Recyclability program.
RecyClass Recyclability is an international program for assessing and certifying plastic packaging design. Its goal is to determine the degree to which a given package is recyclable in existing recycling streams in Europe.
This system is evolving in response to new legislation. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force in February 2025 and will take effect in mid-2026, requiring all packaging placed on the EU market to be recyclable or reusable by 2030.
From 2030, all packaging placed on the EU market must be designed to be recyclable. Packaging will be assessed according to recycling efficiency classes (e.g., “performance grade” A, B, C). After 2030, only recycling classes that have reached the required level (e.g., A, B, C) may be permitted – ultimately, the requirements may be tightened, for example, limited to classes A and B.
In Poland, similar goals are being pursued by the UC100 legal act project – a new act on packaging and packaging waste, the full implementation of which is planned for 2028.
To meet these legislative goals and requirements, RecyClass has developed a methodology for assessing the recyclability of packaging in the form of the RecyClass Recyclability Certification Audit Scheme.
The requirements for the RecyClass Recyclability audit schemes were developed in accordance with the EN 13430 standard and are updated twice a year based on the RecyClass Design for Recycling guidelines – more.
The RecyClass Recyclability certification confirms the recyclability of packaging designs. This certification can be obtained today by anticipating the potential consequences of failing to meet the required level of recyclability.
